The gastrointestinal system is exposed to the outside atmosphere through the mouth and oesophagus and is susceptible to the effects of what we eat or drink. Stomach is the first organ which receives from the oesophagus any food, drink, drugs, medicines or alcohol that we may consume and therefore has to bear the brunt of our indiscretions, resulting in gastritis and ulcer. It is a tough organ and its digestive secretion includes hydrochloric acid. The acid acts as an anti-bacterial agent in addition to its action on food to aid its digestion. Stomach partially digests the food and rids it of bacteria and makes it safer for the intestines.
