Liver is responsible for metabolism of food and drugs including alcohol. Alcohol interferes with the metabolism of both carbohydrates and fats. It depletes glycogen stores of the liver, which protects the organ against damage. Alcohol can cause severe hypoglycaemia if taken on empty stomach. Over a period of three to five years, the patient of cirrhosis becomes emaciated, weak chronically ill and jaundiced. Prevention is better than cure is the most appropriate adage for alcoholic liver disease. Restrict your drinks to one peg and never exceed two. Keep two alcohol free days in a week to allow respiratory processes to work. Act in time before it is too late.
